Brain Basics
Prefrontal Cortex: This is where we think, learn, process and do. Our personality, behaviors, and decision making come from here. Our life happens through this part of our brain. However, this part of our brain can easily go offline when we encounter fear, danger, and stress.
Amygdala: This is our brain’s fear detector, our guard dog, the emotional part of the brain. Fight, flight, or freeze is determined here. It is a part of our Limbic System and prepares us for an emergency.
Neuroplasticity: The ability to actually physically change our brains and the way we think. The ability to create new connections and pathways from repetition.
REGULATION
THE ACT OF BEING ABLE TO ADJUST AND CONTROL OUR EMOTIONS, ACTIONS, BEHAVIOR, BODY, LANGUAGE, AND MINDSET WITHIN OUR ENVIRONMENT.
When kids are dysregulated we want to offer them ways to regulate themselves. We can help them return to a balance is through co-regulation. Here are some strategies and further research on different regulation practices.
Mood Meter
Horizons at SRES uses the University of Yale’s RULER approach. RULER uses a check-in method, Mood Meter, to see how our students are feeling. Click the link to learn more about the mood meter and other ways to check-in on your child! We want to make sure that our students and families are feeling supported. During Horizon's summer program we have partnered with Indiana Wesleyan's School Counseling Graduate Program to offer counseling services to our families.
ADVERSE CHILDHOOD EXPERIENCES (ACES)
ACES are experiences in a child’s life that may include physical and emotional abuse, neglect, caregiver mental illness, and household violence. ACES can affect anyone and can impact your life. The resources that have been provided are to help reduce the affects of ACES. Click the link to learn more about ACES.
